The Toyota Camry has spent decades building a reputation as the sensible choice. Reliable, comfortable and practical, it has long been the executive sedan that quietly moves people between meetings and homes without demanding attention.
However, the new Toyota Camry HEV changes that narrative. After a few days behind the wheel, I found myself driving a Camry that feels far removed from the conservative sedan many Malaysians grew up knowing.
Don’t get me wrong, as the Camry HEV still delivers the comfort, space and refinement the nameplate is famous for, but there is now a layer of confidence and athleticism that makes it genuinely enjoyable to drive.
A Futuristic Reset in Design Language
Toyota has traded the traditional executive-sedan styling for something far more futuristic. The hammerhead-inspired front end, sleek body lines and wide stance give the Camry a presence that feels more premium than its badge suggests. More than once, people stopped to ask what it was.
Yet the biggest surprise comes once I settle into the driver’s seat.
Built on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, the Camry HEV strikes a balance that many carmakers spend years trying to achieve. It feels supple over broken roads while remaining composed when pushed harder.
As someone who has become conditioned to brace for potholes whenever I drive a sedan, I quickly realised that was unnecessary here as the suspension absorbs rough surfaces with an ease that feels almost SUV-like. Expansion joints, uneven tarmac and poorly maintained roads simply disappear beneath the wheels.
Then came the twist.
Sport Mode Awakens a Different Personality
A quick turn of the drive mode selector into “Sport” mode reveals a completely different side to the Camry. The hybrid powertrain instantly feels more alert, throttle responses sharpen and the car begins to shrink around the driver.
With a combined 230PS from its 2.5-litre engine and Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system, acceleration is surprisingly brisk. Overtaking slower traffic requires little planning and highway merges become effortless as the Camry HEV surges forward with an urgency that few would associate with a hybrid executive sedan.

What impressed me most was how natural the power delivery felt. There is enough punch on tap to make spirited driving genuinely rewarding, yet fuel consumption remained impressively low throughout my time with the car. Even with a heavy right foot, efficiency never became a concern.
The handling, on the other hand, is equally convincing.
There is some body roll through corners, but it is progressive and predictable. On fast sweeping bends, the Camry HEV feels planted and reassuring. It may not be chasing sports sedan territory outright, but it is no longer content with simply being comfortable.
Executive Comfort Meets Everyday Practicality
Comfort remains one of its greatest strengths.
The cabin is spacious in every direction. Front occupants enjoy supportive ventilated seats, while rear passengers are treated to generous legroom and reclining seats that make long journeys feel effortless.
During my test drive, the rear seat quickly became a favourite spot for my family, particularly thanks to the dedicated rear control panel that lets passengers adjust climate settings and operate the rear sunshade.

Another highlight in the cabin is the panoramic sunroof, which floods the interior with natural light and enhances the sense of space, giving the already airy Camry HEV a more premium, lounge-like atmosphere whether you’re in the front or being chauffeured in the rear.
Practicality hasn’t been overlooked either, thanks to the cavernous boot that easily swallows luggage, shopping bags and travel gear. For business travellers, frequent road trippers or growing families, the generous cargo space adds yet another layer of versatility to an already well-rounded package.

Tech, Safety and the Final Verdict
Visibility is another area where the Camry HEV excels. Despite its sleek silhouette, outward visibility remains excellent thanks to the TNGA platform’s slim pillars. The “Blind Spot Monitor” proved particularly useful during busy highway traffic, providing an extra layer of confidence when changing lanes.

Technology is integrated thoughtfully rather than aggressively. The 12.3-inch multimedia display, digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto bring the cabin firmly into the modern era, while physical air-conditioning controls ensure everyday usability isn’t sacrificed in the name of minimalism.
One thing to note is that the car’s considerable length can make tight corners and manoeuvring in confined spaces a little more challenging. However, this remains a small trade-off in an otherwise impressively complete package because what stands out most about the Camry HEV is how successfully it balances seemingly conflicting personalities.
It remains the comfortable executive sedan buyers expect — spacious cabin, generous boot and the refinement that built its reputation, and now with the addition of performance, composure and character, giving it everything it needs to win over drivers who once overlooked it.
