7.9-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Mindanao, Tremors Felt In Sabah

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) is monitoring developments following a strong 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck off Mindanao, the Philippines, on Monday morning.

In a post on X, METMalaysia said the earthquake occurred at 7.37am at coordinates 5.7° North and 125.1° East, with a depth of 50km.

The epicentre was located about 97km south of Koronadal City in the southern Philippines.

The department said tremors from the earthquake were felt in parts of Sabah, particularly around Tawau and Semporna.

“METMalaysia is monitoring developments related to the incident,” the agency said.

No tsunami warning or reports of significant damage in Malaysia were immediately issued by the department.

Mindanao lies within the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity due to the movement of tectonic plates.

Authorities are expected to continue monitoring the situation as more information becomes available.
