Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed deep concern over the powerful earthquake that struck off the southern Philippines earlier today, saying Malaysia stands ready to assist if required while emergency services remain on full alert following tremors felt in Sabah.
In a social media post, Datuk Seri Anwar said Malaysia’s thoughts and prayers are with the Filipino people affected by the earthquake and reaffirmed the country’s readiness to render any necessary support as the situation develops
He also acknowledged the impact of the seismic event closer to home, noting that tremors were felt in parts of Sabah. He assured Malaysians that the government is closely monitoring the situation through relevant agencies and that emergency response teams are on standby.
Datuk Seri Anwar said Malaysia and the Philippines remain close friends and ASEAN partners, adding that he hopes for the safety and well-being of all those affected by the disaster and wishes them strength in the recovery period.
Authorities in Malaysia continue to monitor developments following the offshore quake as precautionary measures remain in place across affected regions.
