MCMC Warns Online Punters During 2026 FIFA World Cup

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will step up enforcement against online gambling operators and promoters seeking to capitalise on the FIFA World Cup 2026, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said.

He warned that strict action would be taken against any parties disseminating online gambling content or operating betting websites tied to the month-long football tournament.

“MCMC will take action, and any public who comes across any links or content related to online gambling are encouraged to submit their reports for further action,” Fahmi said.

Fahmi highlighted that enforcement efforts would extend beyond mobile applications to include websites and online platforms attempting to exploit heightened public interest in the World Cup.

The move comes as authorities seek to curb illegal online gambling activities that typically surge during major international sporting events.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 will begin on June 11 at Estadio Azteca with hosts Mexico taking on South Africa, while the final is scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium. Authorities are expected to maintain heightened monitoring throughout the tournament period.
