Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir has urged the Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation (MPRC) to take a more aggressive lead in driving the international expansion of Malaysian oil and gas services and equipment (OGSE) companies.
Speaking at the National OGSE Industry Blueprint 2021–2030 Implementation Steering Committee Meeting, the minister said Malaysia must reduce reliance on domestic demand and position local players to capture opportunities in overseas markets amid rising global uncertainty.
“The geopolitical crisis in West Asia is a reminder that our OGSE industry must be ready for uncertainty. At the same time, when recovery and rebuilding begin, new opportunities will emerge,” he said, calling on Malaysian firms to move early and compete confidently in global markets.
He stressed that MPRC should play a central role not only in coordination but also in execution and tracking outcomes on the ground to ensure Malaysian OGSE companies successfully expand abroad.
“We must reduce over-reliance on domestic business and position our local OGSE players to capture opportunities in West Asia and other growth markets. MPRC should lead this effort for the OGSE industry,” he added.
Concurring with the minister’s call, MPRC President and CEO Mohd Yazid Ja’afar said the agency is driving industry internationalisation through initiatives such as the MPRC Regional Champions Programme, OGSE Strategic Partnership Support Programme and the Growth Beyond OGSE Programme, aimed at helping companies scale abroad while also tapping energy transition opportunities.
He said these efforts also support Malaysia’s broader goals of energy security, affordability and sustainability in an increasingly volatile global environment.
Since 2021, implementation of the National OGSE Industry Blueprint has generated more than RM77.2 million in revenue through the OGSE Development Grant, facilitated over RM2 billion in export sales via Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation programmes, and supported more than 600 companies in areas including export growth, financing access and strategic partnerships.
The blueprint has also trained over 500 industry talents, developed more than 100 technologies through initiatives such as OGTEN and the OGSE DG, and upskilled over 400 companies in sustainability practices under the National OGSE Sustainability Framework.
The steering committee, comprising stakeholders from multiple ministries, agencies and industry players, reviewed the Blueprint’s progress as of May 2026, reaffirming its role as a key framework for strengthening the competitiveness and global presence of Malaysia’s OGSE sector.
