Sixteen years after the release of the biographical drama, “The Social Network,” Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s story gets a new take in its upcoming spiritual successor, “The Social Reckoning.”
Based on the 2021 Facebook leak, Sony Pictures is set to release the companion piece to The Social Network in theaters Oct. 9. Aaron Sorkin helms The Social Reckoning from his own script after earning an Oscar for his screenplay for 2010’s The Social Network, directed by David Fincher.
The plot follows Facebook engineer Frances Haugen (Academy Award winner Mikey Madison) who teams up with Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (Emmy winner Jeremy Allen White) on a risky mission to bring attention to the social network’s biggest secrets. Academy and Emmy Award nominee Jeremy Strong will be playing the titular CEO as he moves with inhuman grace, previously played by Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network – the very role that earned an Academy Award nomination.
Joining the cast are Academy Award nominee Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Bill Magnussen, and comedian Bill Burr as Zuckerberg’s close confidante.

Fans immediately took to social media once the trailer dropped:
One fan commented, “Jeremy Strong, Jeremy Allen White, and Mikey Madison is an absurdly stacked cast for a tech drama.”
“this pairing is actually really interesting. jeremy allen white and mikey madison in a story like this feels like it could be really intense and grounded, especially with that kind of whistleblower angle,” added someone else.
Many have also praised Strong for his uncanny Zuckerberg impression, especially in his voice, tone, and timbre.
The Social Reckoning sees how far Zuckerberg has fallen since its predecessor, as well as Facebook’s growth as a social media platform. But, as the film states, you can’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies.
Slated for an Oct. 9 release, the film is produced by Columbia Pictures, Alcon Entertainment, The Gotham Group in association of Escape Artists, while Sony Pictures Releasing is in charge of distribution.
