Doctor Who Hit With Festive Setback As BBC Cancels 2026 Episode

Doctor Who fans are facing a longer wait for new episodes, with the BBC confirming that the show’s planned 2026 Christmas special has been cancelled.

According to the BBC, the festive episode will no longer go ahead as the broadcaster focuses on securing the next chapter of the iconic sci-fi series — a move that also coincides with the departure of showrunner Russell T Davies.

The decision marks a major turning point for the franchise. Davies, who helped revive Doctor Who in 2005 before returning to lead the series in 2022, announced that he will be stepping away from the programme once again.

Sharing the news on Instagram, he told fans it was “goodbye from me but hello to a big new future for the show”, signalling that significant changes are on the horizon.

While the cancellation may disappoint viewers who were expecting a festive return to the TARDIS, Davies revealed that the special had never progressed beyond the announcement stage.

He said no script had been written and no actor had been approached to take over as the next Doctor, adding that the one-off episode was originally conceived during a period when the show’s future was still uncertain.

Questions about that future have only grown since the last series aired in May 2025. The finale saw Ncuti Gatwa leave the role after two seasons, ending his run with a regeneration that surprised fans by bringing Billie Piper back to the Whoniverse. The BBC has yet to explain exactly what her return means, leaving plenty of speculation about who will lead the next era of the show.

Behind the scenes, Doctor Who is also entering a new phase. The BBC is inviting production companies to bid to co-produce future series following the end of its international partnership with Disney+, which concluded in 2025. The broadcaster says the move is designed to strengthen the show’s long-term future rather than bridge the gap with a standalone special.
