Douglas Lim’s Career First Is Turning Heads In HER SECOND ACT

Malaysian film HER SECOND ACT is already gaining momentum ahead of its cinema release, landing official selections at both the Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF) and the Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest).

As Hype Malaysia reports, the film’s early festival success puts a spotlight on a story that explores family, identity and the unexpected turns that can come later in life.

The film follows Sandra, a middle-aged mother whose surprise cycling victory disrupts the routines and expectations that have long shaped her family life. Rather than focusing on sporting achievement alone, HER SECOND ACT looks at how personal growth can affect the people closest to us, blending humour with relatable family dynamics.

One of the film’s biggest talking points is Douglas Lim’s casting in his first leading dramatic feature role. Best known for his comedy work, Lim steps into a more serious space as Sandra’s husband, delivering a performance that balances wit, frustration and vulnerability as his character navigates the changes unfolding around him.

Leading the film is Jojo Goh, who learned to cycle from scratch and underwent intensive training for the role. Her preparation reflects Sandra’s own journey of stepping outside her comfort zone, adding authenticity to a character determined to redefine what comes next.

Directed by Joey Lee Choi Kin, the film centres on the idea that reinvention is not limited by age or circumstance. Developed since 2022, the project received backing from organisations and industry programmes including FINAS, the ARRI International Support Grant for First-Time Directors, Full Circle Lab and the Shanghai International Film Festival Work-in-Progress programme.

With festival screenings already underway and more international appearances expected before its theatrical release, HER SECOND ACT is positioning itself as a Malaysian film to watch.
