South Africa head coach Hugo Broos believes his team are ready to take on hosts Mexico in their opening Group A match of the FIFA World Cup, despite acknowledging the challenge posed by the home side and a packed stadium in Mexico City.

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s clash, Broos described Mexico as the strongest team in the group, highlighting their quality players and the advantage of playing in front of an expected crowd of 85,000 supporters.

The Belgian coach said South Africa had thoroughly analysed their opponents and arrived early to adapt to Mexico City’s high altitude conditions.

South Africa spent 10 days preparing in the host city, which Broos said was sufficient time for his squad to acclimatise and be ready for the tournament opener.

The match is viewed as crucial for South Africa’s hopes of progressing from Group A, which also includes the Czech Republic and South Korea.

Broos stressed the importance of securing a positive result in the opening fixture, noting that failing to win would immediately place a team under pressure in a tightly contested group.

The encounter also brings back memories of the 2010 World Cup when South Africa opened the tournament against Mexico in Johannesburg and earned a 1-1 draw, with Siphiwe Tshabalala scoring one of the most iconic goals in World Cup history.

Midfielder Teboho Mokoena said the squad wants to embrace the occasion while remaining focused on reaching the knockout stages.

He said the players are determined to compete at the highest level and ensure they leave the tournament without regrets.

Mexico will be seeking their first victory in a World Cup opening match after failing to win any of their previous seven tournament curtain-raisers.
