Malaysia Tightens Digital Identity Security With New MyDigital ID Biometric Upgrade

Malaysia is stepping up efforts to strengthen its digital identity ecosystem as part of broader national security and cyber resilience initiatives, with the government introducing enhanced safeguards for the MyDigital ID platform.

The National Security Council (MKN), Prime Minister’s Department said the move reflects growing concerns over online fraud, identity theft, data breaches and cyber exploitation as digital services become more widely used across public and private sectors.

MKN said MyDigital ID plays a central role in providing secure identity verification for digital services and will now undergo a round of security enhancements aimed at improving accuracy and reducing the risk of unauthorised access.

As part of the upgrade, the system will introduce additional security layers at MyDigital ID registration kiosks, including real time facial biometric checks linked to the National Registration Department database during the registration process. The enhancement is designed to strengthen identity verification and reduce misuse of personal data.

Existing users will also be required to undergo periodic biometric re-verification as part of ongoing efforts to maintain system integrity and safeguard digital identities. The improvements will be rolled out in phases across all MyDigital ID kiosks.

To facilitate the upgrade, kiosk services will be temporarily suspended for maintenance from 6am on 12 June until 6am on 14 June. During this period, users can still register for MyDigital ID via mobile devices by downloading the application through the App Store, Google Play or Huawei AppGallery.
