DBKL Needs To Work With Other Agencies On Illegal Migrant Issue

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has identified several hotspots across the capital where homeless individuals, beggars and foreign nationals regularly congregate, but Mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud says tackling the issue will require a coordinated effort across multiple government agencies.

Speaking after the DBKL Public Housing Maintenance Programme on Sunday, Fadlun said the city authority cannot address the problem on its own, particularly in cases involving foreign nationals and individuals living on the streets.

The programme was attended by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh. Fadlun said the locations were identified through monitoring and surveys carried out jointly by DBKL and the Federal Territories Department. He added that enforcement efforts extend beyond arrests and often require further action by agencies responsible for immigration, welfare and other related matters.

As a result, DBKL is working with relevant authorities through integrated operations aimed at delivering a more comprehensive response to the issue. Fadlun said the city authority remains ready to collaborate with any agency involved, including through a special committee established to coordinate efforts addressing homelessness in Kuala Lumpur.
