Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade sector recorded strong growth in April 2026, with sales value reaching RM174.8 billion, an increase of 15.3% compared with the same month last year.
The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said the positive performance was driven by growth across all major sub-sectors, namely wholesale trade, motor vehicles, and retail trade.
Wholesale trade recorded the strongest expansion, rising 24.1% year-on-year, followed by motor vehicles which increased 15.5%, while retail trade grew 6.3%.
On a month-on-month basis, the sales value of wholesale and retail trade increased by 3.5% in April 2026.
DOSM said the sector’s volume index also continued to show positive momentum, registering a 6.2% year-on-year growth to 170.7 points.
The increase in volume index was mainly supported by the motor vehicles segment, which expanded 13.6%, and wholesale trade, which grew 7.3%.
For monthly comparison, the volume index edged up 0.4%, supported by higher activity in motor vehicles (+9.4%) and wholesale trade (+1.0%).
Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index recorded a 0.4% month-on-month increase in April 2026.
The latest figures indicate continued strength in domestic trade activity, supported by resilient consumer demand, steady economic activity and improving business conditions across key sectors.
