David Beckham now has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame — and the timing couldn’t be more fitting. Just hours before the United States kicked off its opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, the former England captain was honoured in Los Angeles in front of a large crowd and a fair amount of star power.
The moment felt like more than just a celebrity ceremony. It landed right in the middle of football’s biggest stage, arriving back in North America, where the sport has been steadily growing for years. Beckham, 51, has been part of that shift from the start.
Hollywood star Tom Cruise was there to speak about that impact, pointing to Beckham’s arrival in Major League Soccer as a turning point. When Beckham joined LA Galaxy in 2007, MLS was still a developing league. Today, it’s expanded significantly, with Cruise noting it has grown from 13 teams to 30 — and that Beckham helped bring in fans who previously had little interest in the game.
Beckham kept his message personal. He described the honour as “truly incredible” and admitted he never imagined a working-class kid from England would end up with a star in Hollywood. He also tied the moment to the bigger picture, saying it felt right as the US prepares to host the World Cup and reflects on how far football has come in the country over the past three decades.

He also took a moment to thank Cruise directly, calling him the “greatest movie star of our time” and describing the recognition as something he still finds hard to believe. The pair have been friends since Beckham’s early years in Los Angeles, when he first moved to play for LA Galaxy.
Beckham’s influence in the US didn’t stop on the pitch. After retiring in 2013, following spells at clubs including Real Madrid, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, he moved into ownership and business. His stake in Inter Miami CF helped raise the club’s profile, especially after the signing of Lionel Messi in 2023, which pushed MLS further into the global spotlight and led to the club’s first league title.
Away from football, he’s also built a media presence, launching production company Studio 99 in 2019. That shift into entertainment is part of why Friday’s honour felt like more than a sporting tribute — it reflected a career that now sits comfortably between sport, business and pop culture.
Beckham’s wife, Victoria Beckham, added that the recognition comes at a moment when football in the US feels like it’s entering a new phase. With the World Cup underway across the continent, that momentum is now very much on display.
