Several areas across Perlis, Kedah, Sarawak and Sabah are expected to experience thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds until 4pm today, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia).
In Peninsular Malaysia, the affected areas include Perlis and parts of Kedah, namely Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena and Padang Terap.
In Sarawak, the warning covers Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Julau in Sarikei, Kanowit in Sibu, Song and Kapit in Kapit Division, Marudi in Miri, as well as Limbang.
Meanwhile, in Sabah, the affected areas include Kuala Penyu, Beaufort and Tambunan in the Interior Division; Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Kota Belud on the West Coast; Kinabatangan and Sandakan in Sandakan Division; and Pitas and Kudat in Kudat Division.
METMalaysia said the thunderstorm warning is issued when there are indications of thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that are imminent or expected to persist for more than an hour.
The department noted that thunderstorm warnings are short-term alerts and remain valid for no more than six hours from the time of issuance.
