Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim is leading a delegation to the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit in Kazan, Russian Federation, from 17 – 18 June 2026, accompanied by Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Johari bin Abdul Ghani and Minister of Economy Akmal Nasrullah, as well as officials from the Prime Minister’s Office and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit will mark the 35th Anniversary of ASEAN-Russia relations, which began in Kuala Lumpur in 1991. The Summit will provide an opportunity for ASEAN and Russia to take stock of the progress achieved over the past 35 years, and to chart the future direction of ASEAN-Russia cooperation under the Strategic Partnership.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry said discussions are expected to focus on strengthening practical cooperation between ASEAN and Russia, including in the areas of trade and investment, energy, food security, digital economy, science and technology, culture, education, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges. Leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and international developments.
The Summit is also expected to adopt four outcome documents, namely the Kazan Declaration on the 35th Anniversary of the ASEAN-Russia Relations, the Joint Statements on Energy Cooperation, and Cultural Cooperation, as well as the Comprehensive Plan of Action to Implement the ASEAN-Russia Strategic Partnership 2026–2030. These documents will guide ASEAN-Russia cooperation in the coming years and support efforts to build a more resilient and future-oriented partnership.
Malaysia’s participation in the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit reflects the country’s commitment to strengthening ASEAN’s external relations, promoting ASEAN Centrality, and advancing practical cooperation with Dialogue Partners in an increasingly complex global environment.
While in Kazan, the Prime Minister is also expected to call on President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, meet the Rais of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, and hold engagements with ASEAN counterparts to discuss bilateral relations and issues of common concern.
