Minister Asks For Proof 60,000 Students Entered Universities Through Backdoor

Allegations that between 30,000 and 60,000 students were admitted to public universities through “backdoor” channels could damage public confidence in Malaysia’s higher education system, says Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.

He said the claim is serious and risks creating the perception that deserving students may have been sidelined for financial gain.

“The admission system for public universities in this country is implemented through a clear, transparent mechanism based on merit and the stipulated eligibility requirements,” he said in a statement today.

Zambry added that if such claims were true, those making them should present evidence, data and a clear methodology to support the allegations.

He also said several public universities had lodged police reports to allow investigations to be carried out, stressing that the move was not meant to suppress criticism.

“This action is not intended to suppress criticism or restrict freedom of speech, but rather to ensure that every allegation can be proven and addressed through the proper legal process,” he said.

Zambry further reminded the public that freedom of speech does not extend to spreading unverified accusations, adding that constructive criticism is welcomed but must be grounded in facts.

The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), he said, will continue to safeguard the integrity of the country’s public universities and maintain confidence in the system.
