More than two decades after Austin Powers last appeared on the big screen, Mike Myers has finally confirmed that a fourth instalment of the beloved comedy franchise is in development.
The surprise announcement came during Trevor Noah’s World Cup Watch Party when a fan asked Myers whether a fourth film was on the way. His response was short and sweet: “Yes.” While the actor didn’t reveal any further details, the confirmation is the strongest indication yet that the spy spoof is preparing for a comeback.
The Austin Powers franchise has been the subject of sequel rumours for years, with Myers regularly teasing the possibility of returning to the world of the International Man of Mystery. His latest comments suggest that the long-dormant series is finally moving beyond speculation.
What that return will look like remains a mystery. There is currently no word on the plot, production timeline, or which cast members could be returning. Myers has previously floated the idea of exploring the story from Dr Evil’s perspective. However, it remains unclear whether that concept is still part of the plan.
The timing of the announcement is notable. Earlier this week, Myers reprised his role as Dr Evil in a Verizon commercial alongside fellow franchise stars Rob Lowe, Seth Green and Mindy Sterling, sparking renewed interest in the series. The advert quickly reminded fans just how much affection remains for the offbeat comedy world Myers created.
Several cast members have also made it clear they would be open to returning. Michael York, who played Basil Exposition throughout the trilogy, has expressed hope that a fourth film will happen, while Clint Howard recently said he would happily sign on if given the chance.
First launched in 1997, Austin Powers became one of the defining comedy franchises of its era, blending spy-film parody with a string of memorable characters and endlessly quotable lines. The trilogy earned more than US$670 million worldwide and remains a pop culture touchstone decades later.
Given Hollywood’s continued search for major theatrical comedy hits, the return of one of the genre’s most recognisable properties could prove to be a significant moment for both fans and the wider film industry.
