Indonesia Wins Seat On UNESCO Cultural Heritage Committee

Indonesia has secured a seat on UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage for the 2026-2030 term following the 11th General Assembly of States Parties to the 2003 Convention held in Paris on June 17.

The election places Indonesia among the 24 member countries tasked with shaping global policies on cultural preservation and evaluating nominations for UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.

Indonesia’s election reflects international confidence in the country’s commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage and follows diplomatic efforts supported by friendly nations.

During its four-year term, Indonesia said it would work to promote a more inclusive implementation of the 2003 Convention, strengthen the capacity of local communities and advocate for the interests of developing countries in preserving cultural heritage.

The Intergovernmental Committee plays a key role in overseeing the protection and promotion of traditions, performing arts, social practices and other forms of intangible cultural heritage recognised by UNESCO.

Indonesia’s appointment expands its role in international cultural diplomacy and gives the country greater influence in discussions surrounding the preservation of global cultural heritage.
