Local authorities, particularly those overseeing key tourism destinations, must take a more proactive approach to maintaining public facilities and not wait for problems to gain attention on social media before taking action, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said.
Responding to recent online complaints over damaged lifts and escalators in Putrajaya, Yeoh stressed that routine maintenance, cleanliness and safety checks should be carried out consistently as part of basic housekeeping responsibilities.
“Putrajaya is a tourism hub. The leadership of Putrajaya Corporation has gone to the ground and carried out some repair works. But in future, all local authorities have no excuse for neglecting issues related to cleanliness and safety,” she said.
She added that while larger upgrading projects may require additional funding and planning, issues involving public safety and cleanliness should be addressed immediately and continuously.
Hence, Yeoh urged local authorities to conduct more frequent site inspections to identify and resolve problems before they escalate into public complaints.
