PM Visit To Kazan Sees Petronas Establishing Deeper Energy Cooperation with Russia

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s two-day working visit to Kazan has paved the way for deeper energy cooperation between Malaysia and Russia, with Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) expected to play a key role in strengthening long-term collaboration between the two countries.

A major outcome of the visit was Russia’s commitment to ensuring a stable, long-term supply of petroleum, oil and gas to Malaysia under multi-year agreements, enhancing the country’s energy security.

Anwar said discussions on the framework were already in the final stages, with the principles agreed upon and only technical details remaining before the agreement could be signed.

“Company representatives have already come here. It is now a matter of signing and finalising the agreement,” he said.

He added that Russia had not only assured continued energy supplies but had also agreed to establish a long-term cooperation framework, with relevant approvals already secured.

During talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Anwar expressed appreciation for Moscow’s support in expanding energy collaboration involving Petronas, describing it as a strategic step towards strengthening bilateral economic ties.

The Prime Minister said Malaysia and Russia were also exploring broader cooperation in trade, investment, finance and the halal economy, while emphasising the need for Malaysia to adopt a more proactive approach in engaging emerging economic partners.

Anwar also called for the expedited implementation of visa-free travel arrangements and the introduction of direct flights between Malaysia and Russia to boost tourism and strengthen people-to-people connectivity.
