The secret to a good meat pie is the buttery, flaky crust coating the exterior, with a delicious, meaty interior that isn’t too overpowering. That’s what Haus of Pie aims to achieve with their take on the Australian meat pie.
Founded by Malaysian Shawn Lu, he discovered the joys of meat pies from living and working in Sydney for years. “From convenience stores to bakeries to high end restaurants, they were everywhere. Simple yet comforting,” says Shawn. Indeed, meat pies can be found in bakeries as a convenient meal, or a courtside option at a football match.
After spending four years in Sydney — two completing a degree in Media Arts and Production at the University of Technology Sydney and another two working full-time — he returned to Malaysia with a craving for pie. Sadly, this craving was not satiated here. And that’s when Shawn decided to open a pie business specialising in the signature Aussie method.
Currently, Haus of Pie operates as an online business specialising in freshly baked Australian-style meat pies, selling primarily through weekend pop-ups, markets and scheduled deliveries. And the reviews speak for themselves: many complemented the flaky crust, to the superb filling. It’s no wonder the business is booming.
As of late, Haus of Pie has two specialities: their Chicken and Mushroom, and Beef Ragu. Much like the Aussie classic, the Chicken and Mushroom has tenderised chicken, alongside fresh brown mushrooms. The local twist comes with the Sarawak black pepper, offering earthy tones to the already creamy filling. Apple cider vinegar then cuts through the richness.
The Beef Ragu, on the other hand, takes the decadence of the beef ragu, with slow-braised beef in a tomatoey ragu, and wraps it up in that buttery pastry. Unlike other pies that rely too much on the filling or too focused on the pastry, Haus of Pie strikes a balance between the two.
