Malaysian’s Prefer Domestic Travel This Season, While Gen Z Turn To Islands, Airbnb Data

Airbnb data reveals a growing preference among Malaysians for destinations closer to home for mid-year escapes, with domestic travel continuing to gain momentum alongside a strong appetite for more regional travel across Asia-Pacific.

Malaysians are increasingly taking advantage of shorter breaks for quick city getaways, with Kuala Terengganu recording the strongest rise in search interest among Malaysian guests at close to 60% year-on-year, followed by Kuala Lumpur and Malacca

While popular hotspots such as Kuala Lumpur and Selangor continue to be domestic favourites, Gen Z guests in Malaysia are increasingly exploring more distinctive destinations. Pangkor Island emerged as a standout among this generation, recording more than a 20% increase in searches, while Penang and Langkawi are emerging favourites as Gen Zs turn to island and coastal escapes for their domestic “summer” getaways.
