Erling Haaland scored twice as Norway edged Senegal 3-2 in a gripping Group I clash in New York/New Jersey, a result that secured their place in the Round of 32 with a game to spare.
The win extends Norway’s strong run in the tournament and keeps Haaland firmly in the adidas Golden Boot race, with the striker now on four goals in two matches and 59 goals in 52 appearances for his country.
It took a late first-half breakthrough for Norway to take control, as Marcus Holmgren Pedersen pounced on a mistake from Kalidou Koulibaly in the 43rd minute to fire his side ahead after a tight opening period.
Haaland wasted no time after the restart, doubling the lead in the 48th minute with a composed finish from an inch-perfect Martin Odegaard pass, continuing his scoring streak in each of his last 12 competitive matches for Norway.
Senegal responded quickly through Ismaila Sarr in the 53rd minute to briefly swing momentum, but Haaland struck again five minutes later from close range to restore Norway’s cushion.
Sarr set up a tense finale with a stoppage-time second, but Stale Solbakken’s side held firm under pressure to seal qualification for the knockout stage.
Norway’s four World Cup wins have now come against teams from four different confederations: Mexico in 1994, Brazil in 1998, Iraq in 2026 and Senegal in this match.
Erling Haaland was named Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match.
Ismaila Sarr said, “It was tough. We’re a little disappointed. But it’s not over yet, there’s still a third game to play. We’re going to go there to win it, and we’re going to work hard.”
Erling Haaland said, “It was special again. Another amazing night and I’m super proud. I’m enjoying it a lot. I’ve enjoyed playing for Norway ever since my debut and you can see that. The World Cup is nice!”
