Age Verification For Social Media Set For Parliamentary Spotlight

The government’s proposed social media age verification mechanism, rising concerns over job losses linked to artificial intelligence (AI) and automation, as well as the country’s subsidy bill are among the key issues scheduled for discussion in the Dewan Rakyat today.

According to the Order Paper, Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan is set to seek clarification from the Communications Ministry on the purpose of implementing age verification for social media accounts and the safeguards to ensure licensed service providers only access limited personal data and delete it once the purpose has been fulfilled.

Meanwhile, Padang Serai MP Azman Nasrudin will ask the Human Resources Ministry whether AI and automation are contributing to company downsizing and closures in the Klang Valley, amid an increase in job losses this year.

Education issues are also expected to feature prominently, with several MPs seeking updates on preparations for the admission of six-year-olds into Year One beginning in 2027, including classroom capacity and teacher requirements.

On economic matters, Labuan MP Suhaili Abdul Rahman is scheduled to ask the Finance Ministry about factors behind the recent strengthening of the ringgit and whether the currency’s performance is supported by strong economic fundamentals.

The House will also hear questions on the fiscal cost of fuel subsidies, the effectiveness of the BUDI MADANI targeted subsidy programme and the potential impact of higher global oil prices following tensions in the Middle East.

Other topics on today’s agenda include water supply planning for Johor’s rapidly expanding data centre industry, progress of the Solar MADANI programme, internet connectivity, school infrastructure and labour market challenges.
