Law Minister Encourages Law Students To Master AI

Law graduates have been urged to embrace and master Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and view it not as a threat, but as a catalyst for the transformation of the rapidly evolving legal profession.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Dato’ Sri Azalina Othman Said, said that the advancement of AI is reshaping legal practice globally, requiring a shift in mindset among today’s legal practitioners.

She said that although concerns have been raised about AI potentially replacing lawyers, the reality is that the technology serves more as a tool to enhance efficiency and productivity within the profession.

“AI is transforming the way legal work is carried out. Today, a lawyer equipped with the right AI technology can perform tasks that previously required five lawyers,” she said.

According to her, AI should not be perceived as a threat to the legal profession, but rather be leveraged as a catalyst to strengthen professional capabilities and the nation’s justice system.

She further emphasised that today’s law graduates possess a unique advantage as they stand at the intersection of legal studies and technology, a combination that is becoming increasingly important in the digital era.

“With a foundation in both law and technology, you have a distinct advantage. Use AI, shape AI, and most importantly, do not let AI shape you,” she said.

She added that MMU law graduates are particularly well-positioned and remain highly relevant in advancing this field, as they are products of a higher education institution that is a leader in information technology and digital innovation.

The event also served as a platform to strengthen strategic collaboration between higher education institutions and government agencies in advancing legal education and improving access to legal aid services for the community.

Also present at the event were MMU President, Prof. Dato’ Ts. Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su’ud, and Datuk Zamri Bin Misman, Director General of the Legal Affairs Division, Prime Minister’s Department.
