A bumper durian harvest across multiple states, coupled with favourable weather conditions, has triggered a supply glut that is driving down prices of the king of fruits nationwide.
Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) Deputy Director-General (Food Security and Operations) Faisal Iswardi Ismail said simultaneous production in almost all durian-growing states has resulted in abundant supply during the current peak season, which is expected to last until August.
“Farm-gate prices for kampung durian currently range between RM1 and RM4 per kilogramme depending on location and supply volume, while premium varieties such as Musang King have also seen significant price declines,” he said.
Faisal noted that Musang King, which typically retails between RM45 and RM60 per kilogramme depending on grade, was recently spotted selling for as low as RM5 per kilogramme during a visit to Bentong.
Despite weaker prices, Malaysia’s durian export outlook remains strong. Based on compliance certification data, durian exports reached 42,994 tonnes last year and are projected to rise to 50,000 tonnes in 2026.
To support the market and reduce reliance on China, which accounts for about 60% of Malaysia’s durian exports, FAMA is expanding its export footprint to high-potential markets including Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Japan and the Maldives.
Faisal said FAMA is also working with 13 Export Management Companies (EMCs) across 10 countries to identify and secure new overseas buyers, helping absorb excess supply and strengthen the global presence of Malaysian durians.
