Mexico completed a perfect group stage campaign at the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a confident 3-0 win over Czechia on Wednesday, sealing top spot in Group A while eliminating their opponents from the tournament.
Already assured of qualification before kick-off, the co-hosts made it three wins from three matches in front of a lively home crowd at Mexico City Stadium, with goals from Mateo Chavez, Julian Quinones and Alvaro Fidalgo.
Czechia entered the match needing a result to keep their knockout hopes alive and started brightly, pushing forward early through Denis Visinsky, who came close with a low effort in the eighth minute that narrowly missed the target.
However, Mexico gradually took control of proceedings and broke the deadlock ten minutes into the second half when Chavez used his pace to get in behind the defence before calmly finishing to spark celebrations in the stands.
Momentum shifted firmly in Mexico’s favour and they doubled their lead just six minutes later when Quinones reacted quickest inside the box to poke home from close range.
The co-hosts continued to dominate as Czechia struggled to respond, and the atmosphere intensified late on when veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa was introduced for a special appearance in what is his sixth World Cup.
Mexico then added a third in stoppage time through Fidalgo to complete a commanding victory and underline their status as one of the early standout teams of the tournament.
Key statistics showed Mexico made history by winning all three group matches at a World Cup for the first time, while also keeping clean sheets in every game for the first time since 1970.
Mateo Chavez was named Superior Player of the Match for his decisive opening goal and all-round performance in a result that sends Mexico into the Round of 32 with strong momentum.
