Loke: Segamat Inland Port To Create Jobs, Attract Investments

The reactivation of Segamat Inland Port is expected to accelerate economic growth and strengthen industrial activity across northern Johor, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said today.

Speaking after witnessing the signing of a lease agreement for the port’s reactivation, Loke said the long-idled inland port would generate commercial spillover benefits for Segamat, Muar, Tangkak and Batu Pahat while supporting the region’s manufacturing and logistics sectors.

He said the facility would initially create around 80 direct jobs to operate the terminal, while also serving as a catalyst for broader industrial expansion and fresh investments.

“When Segamat Inland Port begins operations, it will require 80 personnel to manage the terminal, so there will be 80 job opportunities.

“But it will also catalyse the growth of other industries. Better logistics is one of the factors that can attract investment here, or enable existing factories to expand their operations, which will create employment opportunities for local residents,” he said.

The agreement was signed between Segamat Inland Port Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Port Klang Authority, and Infinity Landbridge Express Sdn Bhd.

Loke said the project was awarded through an open tender process and would be fully funded by the private sector without any government expenditure.

He added that the Transport Ministry is also focused on maximising the use of the double-track railway network connecting Gemas and Johor Bahru to strengthen commercial freight transportation.

According to him, greater adoption of rail freight would support the government’s long-term goal of shifting cargo transportation from roads to rail, reducing heavy vehicle traffic and improving road safety.

“If this effort continues and more parties use rail as an alternative to trucks, we can reduce the number of trucks on the road, which is important for long-term road safety.

“One locomotive can pull 30 to 40 wagons. It can transport large volumes at once, providing better returns for the industry,” he said.
