Johor Polls Draw 172 Candidates, Nomination Ends Without Incident

A total of 172 candidates from various political parties have been confirmed to contest the upcoming Johor state election after the nomination process concluded smoothly across all 56 nomination centres, with no nominations rejected.

Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the field comprises 138 male and 34 female candidates, with Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan each fielding 56 candidates, followed by Perikatan Nasional (33), Parti Bersama Malaysia (15), MUDA (four), one candidate each from Parti Orang Asli Malaysia and Parti Sosialis Malaysia, as well as six independents.

“The contests will feature 14 straight fights, 27 three-cornered battles, 12 four-cornered contests and three five-cornered fights,” Ramlan said.

Meanwhile, Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the nomination process passed without any untoward incidents, with 4,832 police officers and personnel deployed statewide.

Police have so far approved 26 campaign permits and urged all parties to campaign responsibly and comply with election laws throughout the campaign period.

Campaigning for the state election is officially underway and will run until 11:59pm on July 10 ahead of polling on July 11, with early voting scheduled for July 7.
