European Technology Commissioner Henna Virkkunen and Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook held what the European Commission described as a constructive video call on Monday, as both sides continued discussions on issues of mutual interest.
A Commission spokesperson said the pair discussed “topics of common interest” and that work on those matters is continuing, without providing further details.
The meeting comes as Apple and the European Commission remain at odds over the rollout of the company’s artificial intelligence features in the European Union.
Apple has said its Siri AI features will not initially be available on iPhones and iPads in the EU, arguing that the European Commission has failed to engage constructively on measures needed to safeguard user privacy and security.
The Commission, however, has rejected Apple’s criticism, saying the company has not developed the interoperability required to comply with the bloc’s regulations.
The latest talks suggest both sides are maintaining dialogue despite ongoing disagreements over the implementation of the EU’s digital rules and Apple’s artificial intelligence services.
