Anwar: US-Iran Breakthrough Positive But Situation Remains Delicate

Malaysia has welcomed the understanding reached between the United States and Iran to end months of conflict, while stressing that the situation remains fragile and vulnerable to disruption, Bernama reported.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia also commends the role played by Gulf states, Türkiye, Pakistan and other countries in facilitating the memorandum of understanding.

He said the priority now must be strict compliance with all terms of the ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping.

“The prospects for peace remain fragile and vulnerable to sabotage,” he said during his keynote address at the 39th Asia-Pacific Roundtable held here today.

Anwar also highlighted the wider economic consequences of prolonged instability, particularly on food and energy prices.

“Food and energy prices remain high as countries compete to secure supply. Billions of dollars that should have been used for social and economic development have instead been diverted to efforts to secure essential goods,” he said.

“This is not just a statistic on paper; it has an impact on people’s lives,” he added.

Reports from Qatar indicated that Iran and the United States had made “positive progress” in indirect negotiations concluding on Wednesday, with discussions focusing on the Strait of Hormuz.

The waterway previously handled about one-fifth of global oil supply before tensions escalated.

The three-day forum, organised by the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia, concluded today.
