Argentina enter their World Cup round of 16 clash against Egypt as the favourites, but both Rizal and Adrian believe this could be a much tougher night than many are expecting.
While Argentina have looked comfortable throughout the tournament, their extra-time struggle against Cabo Verde served as a reminder that knockout football offers no easy games. Egypt, unbeaten so far, will look to replicate that frustration with their disciplined defensive structure and quick counter-attacking threat.
Rizal believes Egypt have the tools to make life difficult for Lionel Scaloni’s side, especially through their attacking duo of Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush.
“Egypt are one of those teams that rarely make matches easy. Hossam Hassan has built a side that is compact, disciplined and happy to defend deep before breaking quickly through Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush,” Rizal said.
The biggest tactical question, according to Rizal, will be how Egypt handle Messi. He expects the Pharaohs to crowd the Argentine captain whenever he receives possession, similar to how Cabo Verde disrupted Argentina’s rhythm.
However, Rizal believes Argentina’s biggest advantage lies beyond Messi. The midfield trio of Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister and Enzo Fernández could become the difference as they look to control possession and gradually break down Egypt’s defensive wall.
“Argentina’s biggest strength isn’t just Messi,” Rizal added. “De Paul, Mac Allister and Enzo Fernández are capable of controlling possession and patiently moving opponents around until spaces appear.”
Adrian, meanwhile, sees this as a potential showcase for football’s two biggest names, with Messi and Salah expected to carry their respective nations.
“Argentina vs Egypt has all the ingredients of a classic FIFA World Cup Round of 16 encounter, but the spotlight will inevitably fall on two of football’s greatest icons, Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah,” Adrian said.
For Adrian, Argentina’s attacking depth gives them the edge. While Salah remains Egypt’s main creative outlet, Argentina can rely on Julián Álvarez to provide pressing, movement and goals alongside Messi.
The tactical battle is expected to follow a familiar pattern. Argentina will look to dominate possession and patiently search for openings, while Egypt will sit deeper and attempt to punish any mistakes on the counter.
Rizal expects a cagey contest where Egypt frustrate Argentina for long periods, but believes the world champions’ experience will eventually tell.
“Argentina have too much experience, too much composure and too many match winners,” Rizal said.
Adrian is slightly more optimistic about the attacking quality on show, believing Messi and Álvarez can find a way through even against a stubborn Egyptian defence.
Both agree that Egypt have enough quality to cause problems, but Argentina’s midfield control and individual brilliance should see them progress.
