Japan’s weather agency on Saturday issued its highest landslide warning for Yakushima Island in southwestern Kagoshima Prefecture. They urged residents to exercise maximum vigilance amid heavy rain.
The Japan Meteorological Agency stated that a disaster was likely to occur in some form. The Level 5 emergency warning is the highest on Japan’s warning system.
The warning follows heavy rain brought by Typhoon Krovanh and a weather front. Low-lying areas in western Japan face a risk of flooding, while rivers could swell or overflow.
Southern Kyushu, including Kagoshima, could receive up to 200 millimetres of rain in the 24 hours to 6 am Sunday, the agency said.
Residents in affected areas have been urged to remain alert to landslides, flooding and rising river levels.
