Malaysia’s expanding data centre industry is creating high-skilled jobs with salaries of up to RM30,000 a month, significantly above the country’s median monthly wage of RM2,793 in 2024, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said.
Gobind said entry-level positions in the sector offer monthly salaries ranging from RM3,000 to RM7,000, while senior roles command between RM10,000 and RM30,000.
Citing Bank Negara Malaysia’s “From Bytes to Bucks: The Economics of Data Centres in Malaysia, Q3 2025” report, he said data centre investments are driving demand for high-skilled professionals such as network engineers, cloud architects and data scientists, with wages exceeding the national average.
Gobind said major technology companies are also offering specialised training and certification programmes for Malaysians, while the government is working with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) ecosystem to develop a skilled workforce for the industry.
“Data centres contribute significant value to the country’s digital ecosystem by creating high-skilled jobs with higher wages, equipping Malaysians with emerging technology skills and facilitating technology transfer,” he said.
Addressing concerns over the environmental impact of rapid data centre expansion, including AI-powered facilities, Gobind said the government has adopted a proactive approach to ensure sustainable development.
He said every data centre proposal undergoes a comprehensive assessment, taking into account cumulative demand for electricity and water, land use, digital infrastructure requirements and other sustainability factors before approval is granted.
