OpenAI has received approval from the US Department of Commerce for a broader rollout of its advanced GPT-5.6 model, according to Axios, which cited a person familiar with the matter.
The artificial intelligence company is expected to begin a wider release of GPT-5.6 this week after completing additional testing and holding discussions with government officials, the report said.
The move follows a delay in the model’s full public launch last month after a request from the US government. OpenAI had initially restricted access to a limited group of vetted partners, with details of those users shared with authorities.
Reuters was unable to independently verify the report. OpenAI, the White House and the US Department of Commerce did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
GPT-5.6 is part of OpenAI’s continued push to expand its generative AI capabilities as governments globally increase scrutiny over the development and deployment of advanced artificial intelligence systems.
