The Johor state government has declared Monday (July 13) a special public holiday following Barisan Nasional’s (BN) commanding victory in the 16th Johor state election, a move described as a gesture of appreciation to the people for fulfilling their democratic responsibilities.
The announcement was made by newly sworn-in Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi after receiving the consent of the Johor Regent, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim. The public holiday comes a day after BN secured a resounding mandate, winning 48 of the 56 seats contested to retain control of the Johor state government with a more than two-thirds majority.
The decisive victory cemented BN’s position as the dominant political force in Johor and provides the coalition with a strong mandate to continue implementing its development agenda under the state administration led by Onn Hafiz.
Pakatan Harapan (PH) emerged as the second-largest bloc with eight seats, while Perikatan Nasional (PN) and other parties failed to secure representation in the state assembly. The outcome underscores a significant shift in voter sentiment, with BN strengthening its grip on one of Malaysia’s most economically important states.
In announcing the special holiday, Onn Hafiz said the declaration was intended as a token of gratitude to Johoreans who exercised their constitutional right by participating in the state election. The holiday also provides an opportunity for the people to celebrate the peaceful conclusion of the electoral process while allowing families to spend additional time together.
