The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for several states across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, with heavy rain and strong winds expected until 7pm today.
The affected areas are Terengganu (Besut, Setiu, Hulu Terengganu and Dungun), Pahang (Cameron Highlands and Rompin), Selangor (Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Klang, Gombak, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat and Sepang), Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan (Seremban and Port Dickson), and Johor (Segamat, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Mersing, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru).
In East Malaysia, the warning covers Sarawak, including Lundu and Kuching in Kuching Division, Samarahan, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang.
In Sabah, the affected areas are Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Keningau and Tambunan in the Interior Division, the West Coast, Sandakan, Kudat and the Federal Territory of Labuan.
MetMalaysia said the warning is issued when there are indications of thunderstorms capable of producing rainfall exceeding 20mm per hour that are imminent or expected to persist for more than an hour.
The agency noted that thunderstorm warnings are short-term alerts, with each issuance valid for no more than six hours.
