Transport Minister and Democratic Action Party (DAP) Secretary-General Anthony Loke Siew Fook is set for a straight fight in the Chennah state by-election after Barisan Nasional (BN) named Negeri Sembilan MCA Youth chief Siow Kong Choon as its candidate.
The contest pits one of Pakatan Harapan’s most prominent national leaders against a younger challenger seeking to revive MCA’s fortunes in a constituency that has been represented by Loke since 2013.
For BN, Siow’s candidacy represents an opportunity to reposition MCA with a new generation of leadership. For Loke, the by-election is more than a contest for a state seat — it is a crucial political test of his standing in Negeri Sembilan and his ability to retain one of DAP’s traditional strongholds.
Siow has emerged as one of MCA’s younger national leaders after rising through the party’s youth wing to become its national Youth chief.
Known for advocating youth participation, entrepreneurship and education issues, Siow has increasingly become one of MCA’s public faces as the party attempts to rebuild following years of declining electoral support.
While he lacks Loke’s ministerial experience and electoral track record, party leaders are expected to market him as a fresh alternative capable of connecting with younger voters while representing BN’s efforts to renew its leadership bench.
The Chennah by-election will be Siow’s highest-profile electoral contest to date.
Loke first captured Chennah in the 2013 general election and has since strengthened his position in the constituency.
In the 2023 Negeri Sembilan state election, he secured 5,888 votes, defeating Perikatan Nasional’s Rosmadi Arif by a majority of 2,200 votes, increasing his support compared with previous elections.
Chennah, a mixed rural constituency in Negeri Sembilan, has traditionally featured contests involving DAP, MCA and, more recently, Perikatan Nasional. The seat comprises nine polling districts with an electorate of more than 14,500 voters.
Beyond his national profile as Transport Minister, Loke has built a long-standing presence in Negeri Sembilan, where he has served as both a state assemblyman and Member of Parliament over multiple terms.
His ministerial role has also given him greater visibility through transport infrastructure initiatives and public policy reforms, factors that could reinforce voter confidence.
However, Siow’s campaign may benefit from several dynamics.
As a first-time challenger in the constituency, he is likely to focus on local development issues while attempting to attract younger voters and traditional BN supporters who may have drifted away from MCA in recent elections.
The contest also provides MCA with an opportunity to measure whether its organisational rebuilding efforts can translate into improved electoral performance.
While Chennah has become one of DAP’s safer seats in Negeri Sembilan, a defeat would carry consequences extending well beyond the state constituency.
Loke is not only DAP’s secretary-general but also one of the party’s most recognisable national leaders and a senior Cabinet minister. Losing the seat would represent a major political setback, raising questions over DAP’s grassroots strength in Negeri Sembilan and potentially weakening his authority within both the party and the unity government.
A defeat would also hand Barisan Nasional and MCA a symbolic victory by unseating one of DAP’s most senior leaders in his political backyard.
Conversely, retaining Chennah with an increased majority would reinforce Loke’s standing ahead of the next general election while demonstrating continued support for Pakatan Harapan in Negeri Sembilan despite an increasingly competitive political landscape.
For MCA, even narrowing Loke’s majority could be viewed as progress as the party seeks to rebuild support among Chinese and mixed-seat voters.
