Singapore opposition veteran and Reform Party secretary-general Kenneth Jeyaretnam has died at the age of 67, his family announced on Sunday.
His wife, Amanda Jeyaretnam, said he died peacefully in his sleep on July 18, surrounded by family. Funeral arrangements for a private family service are being finalised, while a memorial will be held at a later date.
The eldest son of late opposition pioneer J.B. Jeyaretnam, Kenneth took over the Reform Party in 2009 after his father’s death and led the party through three General Elections, although it failed to win a parliamentary seat.
A University of Cambridge economics graduate, Jeyaretnam spent years in international banking before entering politics, holding roles at institutions including HSBC’s merchant banking arm, Banque Indosuez, Lehman Brothers and Nomura International.
Jeyaretnam disclosed in 2024 that he was undergoing treatment in London for deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary embolism. He skipped Singapore’s 2025 General Election on medical advice but said he hoped to return to politics
