Malaysia’s near-universal use of digital services is creating a growing business challenge as consumer adoption races ahead of their understanding of cyber threats, raising pressure on companies to make online security stronger, simpler and more visible.
An IDEMIA Secure Transactions (IST) study found that 98% of Malaysians are frequent users of digital services, yet nearly half admitted they do not fully understand how cyber risks work or how they could be exposed.
The gap threatens to weaken confidence in Malaysia’s digital economy as fraud, data theft and artificial intelligence-powered attacks become increasingly sophisticated.
The study, involving more than 3,300 respondents across 11 countries, found that 53% of Malaysians feel more vulnerable online than they did five years ago.
Some 87% expressed concern over fraud conducted through digital tools, while 91% worried about personal data theft when using digital services.
The findings show that strong adoption does not necessarily translate into digital confidence.
Consumers continue to rely heavily on online banking, payments, communications and other digital platforms, but increasingly expect companies to protect them without adding friction or complexity.
For financial institutions, telecommunications providers and digital platforms, cybersecurity is therefore becoming a core customer-experience issue rather than merely a technical function.
Security Must Be Felt, Not Just Built
IST Chief Technology Officer Marc Bertin said trust was becoming a defining factor in how users engage with technology.
“In Malaysia, digital adoption shows to be one of the strongest, but users also expect greater transparency, stronger protection and more reassurance around how their data and transactions are secured,” he said.
Bertin said the industry’s challenge was no longer limited to securing digital services, but also making protection understandable, tangible and ready for emerging threats.
That could require companies to rethink how they communicate security features, warn customers about risks and respond to fraud.
Users may not understand the technical details behind encryption, authentication or tokenisation, but they increasingly expect these protections to operate seamlessly in the background.
AI and Quantum Risks Raise the Stakes
The cybersecurity landscape is also becoming more complex as AI enables more convincing scams, impersonation attempts and fraudulent communications.
Quantum computing is beginning to enter the public debate as well.
Although only a minority of Malaysians clearly understand the technology, 83% of those familiar with quantum computing already perceive it as a potential cybersecurity threat.
The finding signals that businesses may need to begin preparing for risks that are not yet fully understood by the wider public.
Trust Is Now a Competitive Advantage
For companies operating in payments, telecommunications, automotive, Internet of Things and digital services, the commercial stakes are rising.
A security breach can inflict more than financial damage. It can erode customer trust, hurt brand credibility and slow the adoption of new digital products.
Companies that embed protection into their services while keeping transactions fast and convenient could gain a competitive edge.
Malaysia has already established itself as a digital-first market.
The next challenge is ensuring that consumer confidence keeps pace with adoption, and that businesses can make users feel as secure online as they are connected.
