Kelantan is positioning itself as a growing player in Malaysia’s renewable energy landscape with the launch of the Large Scale Solar (LSS5) project in Pasir Mas, involving a combined capacity of 127.59MW from Samaiden Legasi Timur Sdn Bhd and GVU Fajar Timur.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) Datuk Fadillah Haji Yusof said the project reflects the potential of collaboration between the Federal Government, Kelantan state government and the private sector in advancing the country’s low-carbon economy.
The project comprises Samaiden Legasi Timur’s 99.99MW solar facility and GVU Fajar Timur’s 27.60MW project, which have secured key milestones including land lease agreements with Perbadanan Kemajuan Iktisad Negeri Kelantan (PKINK), power purchase agreements with Tenaga Nasional Bhd and financial close through financing facilities provided by Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd.
Fadillah said Kelantan has strong potential to expand its renewable energy capacity, particularly in solar generation, supported by suitable land availability, state government backing and private sector participation.
Beyond contributing to Malaysia’s electricity supply, the Pasir Mas solar project is expected to create job opportunities, stimulate local economic activity and strengthen supporting industries in Kelantan.
The project comes as Malaysia continues to accelerate its energy transition agenda under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), with the country targeting renewable energy to account for 35% of installed capacity by 2030 and 70% by 2050. As of June 2026, renewable energy capacity had nearly reached 32% of the national installed capacity mix.
