Blade Runner returns once more, this time 50 years into the future. Ridley Scott’s original 1982 Blade Runner helped define modern cyberpunk cinema, and Denis Villeneuve’s legacy sequel, Blade Runner 2049, is just as thoughtful, breathtaking, and emotionally resonant as its predecessor. As such, it’s no surprise that Blade Runner 2099, the continuation of Villeneuve’s masterpiece, is shaping up to be one of this year’s most intriguing releases.
According to Prime Video, the sci-fi show is set in a Los Angeles that’s been transformed by a successful replicant uprising, with replicants now occupying many of the positions of power previously held by humans. The story follows Cora (Hunter Schafer), a fugitive who poses as a Blade Runner in one final attempt to escape her past. She is forced to partner with Olwen (Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh), a veteran replicant Blade Runner who is nearing the end of her life, and tasked with tracking down a runaway whose existence threatens the balance of this new world.
Rather than simply revisiting similar themes, Blade Runner 2099 appears ready to examine what happens after the power structures seen throughout the films are turned upside down. Where previous Blade Runner adaptations largely explored humanity’s treatment of replicants, the TV series looks poised to ask similarly compelling questions from the opposite perspective.
Dimitri Abold and Lewis Gribben, whose roles are so far undisclosed. Hugo Hamlet is set to play Buster Friendly, the popular radio host who was omitted from the movies. Other recurring cast members are Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Matthew Needham, Tom Burke, and Maurizio Lombardi.
Ridley Scott will serve as executive producer, while Silka Luisa (Shining Girls) acts as writer and showrunner. Michael Green, a writer on Blade Runner 2049 was consulted on the script and also serves as an executive producer, helping maintain continuity across the franchise. Jeremy Podeswa (Six Feet Under) was initially brought on to direct Blade Runner 2099, but due to scheduling conflicts, he exited the project. Jonathan Van Tulleken, the director of early Shogun episodes was brought on instead. Ariel Kleiman (Andor Season 2), Marcela Said (Lupin, Narcos: Mexico), and Karena Evans (Mr & Mrs Smith) are also confirmed to direct episodes of the series. Luisa has described the show’s visual approach as “sunshine noir,” suggesting audiences can expect a fresh aesthetic while preserving the atmospheric and philosophical qualities that have always defined Blade Runner.
Blade Runner 2099 is set to be released exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on November 25, 2026. The project has been developed as an eight-episode limited series, with all episodes releasing simultaneously.
