Selangor Permaisuri Tengku Permaisuri Hajah Norashikin has called for an immediate end to animal cruelty following recent cases involving pets and stray animals, particularly dogs and cats.
In a royal statement issued on Saturday, Her Royal Highness expressed her disappointment and anger over the incidents, saying such acts could not be tolerated.
As the Royal Patron of the Stray Free Selangor (SFS) initiative under SPCA Selangor, she said abusing, injuring, killing or mistreating animals was not only against the law but also went against the values of compassion and humanity.
She stressed that no one should be exempt from legal action, regardless of their position, background or affiliation. The same principle applies to individuals, organisations, companies, government agencies and enforcement authorities.
Her Royal Highness called for thorough investigations and appropriate action against those found responsible for animal cruelty, including cases involving enforcement personnel.
She said public trust in enforcement institutions depends on actions being carried out professionally, with integrity and compassion, rather than through unnecessary force or measures that cause suffering.
The Selangor Permaisuri also urged the government, local authorities, relevant agencies and the public to strengthen cooperation in protecting animal welfare. This includes improving rescue efforts, treatment, management and protection of animals in a humane manner.
She further called on the Federal Government to review penalties under the Animal Welfare Act 2015 to ensure stricter punishment and more consistent enforcement against offenders.
Her Royal Highness said the way society treats animals reflects its values, adding that protecting vulnerable creatures is a measure of a community’s maturity and compassion.
