Singapore shares closed lower on July 31, with losses in banking and industrial heavyweights dragging the benchmark index down.
The Straits Times Index fell 45.08 points, or 0.79%, to 5,628.50.
DBS lost S$0.83 to S$74.02, topping market turnover at S$392.73 million. UOB declined S$0.48 to S$43.40, while ST Engineering shed S$0.58 to S$10.08 on S$173.92 million in trades.
Jardine Matheson was the biggest index decliner by price, falling US$1.18 to US$66.41, while Singtel slipped S$0.14 to S$4.44.
Gains in selected counters helped cushion the decline. Jardine Cycle & Carriage climbed S$1.07 to S$29.40, AEM advanced S$0.67 to S$8.24 and Venture rose S$0.43 to S$15.99.
Singapore Exchange added S$0.34 to S$24.46, while OCBC edged up three cents to S$29.13 on turnover of S$204.94 million.
Ambiq Micro surged US$7.70 to US$81.50, although trading was thin.
