All 401 polling centres for the 16th Negeri Sembilan state election opened simultaneously at 8 am today, with 859,760 registered voters, including 7,391 postal voters, eligible to cast their ballots.
Voting is taking place across 1,668 polling streams at schools, town halls, community halls and colleges, and will continue until 6 pm.
The Election Commission (EC) is targeting a voter turnout of between 72 and 75%, with preliminary results expected from around 10 pm and the full outcome anticipated before midnight.
The polling day follows a strong early voting turnout on July 28, when 14,995 voters, or 91.06% of those eligible, cast their ballots, surpassing the EC’s 90% target.
Weather conditions were generally favourable across the state this morning. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has forecast sunny weather through the morning and afternoon in Seremban, Jempol, Jelebu, Kuala Pilah, Tampin, Port Dickson and Rembau, although heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in most areas later in the day.
A total of 103 candidates are contesting the 36 state assembly seats. Pakatan Harapan is fielding candidates in all constituencies, followed by Barisan Nasional (25), Bersatu (24), Perikatan Nasional (11), four Independents, and one candidate each from Barisan Jemaah Islamiah Se-Malaysia (Berjasa), Parti Orang Asli Malaysia (ASLI) and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM).
