Much of Malaysia is set for a wet Sunday evening as thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds are forecast to hit large parts of the country until 6pm, although several major cities including Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Seremban and Melaka are expected to be spared.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the warning covers parts of Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, Johor, Sarawak and Sabah.
In Peninsular Malaysia, affected areas include Padang Terap, Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu in Kedah; Kerian, Larut, Matang dan Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, Kinta, Kampar, Batang Padang and Muallim in Perak; most parts of Kelantan and the whole of Terengganu.
The warning also extends to several districts in Pahang, including Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Raub, Jerantut, Bentong, Kuantan, Pekan and Rompin, as well as Hulu Selangor and parts of Johor, namely Batu Pahat, Kluang, Mersing, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru.
In East Malaysia, widespread thunderstorms are expected across multiple divisions in Sarawak, including Kuching, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang, while in Sabah, the warning covers parts of the Interior, West Coast, Sandakan and Kudat divisions.
MetMalaysia said the thunderstorm warning is issued when there are indications of thunderstorms capable of producing rainfall exceeding 20mm per hour that are occurring or expected to persist for more than an hour.
