The construction of Penang Hill’s new eight-passenger gondola lift has moved closer to completion after more than 60 containers carrying cable car components arrived in Malaysia from Austria, with logistics handled by Gebrüder Weiss.
The components, produced by Austrian cable car specialist Doppelmayr at its facility in Wolfurt, were transported through a multimodal route involving road, rail and sea freight before reaching Penang. The shipment travelled by rail from Austria to Hamburg before being shipped to Southeast Asia, taking about 38 days at sea.
Gebrüder Weiss Malaysia then managed customs clearance and coordinated the final transportation of the equipment to Penang Hill near George Town.
“Managing a multimodal project of this scale requires precise coordination. Every transport mode must be carefully synchronized, and weather conditions at the ports must be closely monitored to avoid delays and additional costs,” said Michael Kramer, Key Account Manager Air & Sea at Gebrüder Weiss in Wolfurt.
The logistics provider said having operations in both Austria and Malaysia helped ensure the shipment stayed on schedule, with deliveries made through several partial consignments according to a fixed timeline.
Doppelmayr Head of Shipping Egon Vögel said the company relied on dependable logistics partners for major infrastructure projects worldwide.

The Penang Hill Cable Car is expected to begin operations in 2026, providing a new transport option from the lower terminal near George Town to the upper terminal located about 720 metres above sea level within the Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-recognised protected area.
