The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) rescued two foreign nationals believed to have been kidnapped during a shootout with suspects in Taman Amira, Telaga Bata, Alor Setar, Kedah, last night, before arresting six people in separate raids in Kedah, Penang and Kuala Lumpur.
The incident occurred at about 8:40 pm on August 7, when a team from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department’s Special Investigation Division (D9) raided a house to rescue the victims.
Police said a suspect fired several shots at the team, prompting officers to return fire until the threat was neutralised. A suspected foreign national was pronounced dead at about 9:30 pm. No identification documents were found on the deceased.
The victims, a foreign man in his 70s and a foreign woman in her 30s, were found with their eyes covered and hands cuffed.
Police also recovered two semi-automatic Beretta pistols containing five rounds of ammunition, a revolver containing four rounds and a long machete near the suspect.
Following the incident, police launched several separate raids and arrested six people — a local man, four foreign men and a foreign woman — aged between their 20s and 40s in areas across Kedah, Penang and Kuala Lumpur.
The case is being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Kidnapping Act 1961 for kidnapping for ransom. Those convicted face imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years and whipping.
Police said remand applications for all six suspects would be made today under Section 12 of the same Act.
The public has been advised not to speculate or make comments that could interfere with the investigation or cause public concern.
PDRM Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar S. Muthuvelu said a media conference on the incident would be held on August 10.
