JP Morgan Sees S&P 500 Hitting 8,000 By Year-End On AI, Earnings Strength

JP Morgan has raised its 2026 year-end target for the S&P 500 to 8,000 from 7,800, betting that resilient corporate earnings and accelerating returns from artificial intelligence (AI) investment will continue powering Wall Street higher.

Reuters reported that the revised forecast implies around 3.1% upside from the benchmark’s latest close of 7,757.64 and puts JP Morgan among at least seven brokerages expecting the S&P 500 to reach the 8,000 mark by the end of the year.

The bank said confidence in AI spending has strengthened as major hyperscalers convert growing backlogs into revenue, supporting cloud growth and easing concerns over returns on heavy capital expenditure. Google, Amazon and Microsoft were highlighted among companies showing stronger cloud growth, order visibility and cash-flow prospects.

JP Morgan also lifted its S&P 500 earnings-per-share forecast to US$365 for 2026, from US$350 previously, while its 2027 estimate was raised to US$420 from US$390.

The upgrade comes after a strong earnings season, with 85.1% of the 436 S&P 500 companies that had reported June-quarter results as of Aug 7 morning beating analyst expectations, well above the long-term average of 68%, according to LSEG data.

Despite the bullish earnings outlook, JP Morgan kept its forward valuation target at around 20 times earnings, pointing to risks from elevated interest rates, geopolitical uncertainty and increased equity and debt issuance.

The S&P 500 has climbed 13.3% so far in 2026, supported largely by optimism surrounding AI and strong corporate profitability.
