The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is closely monitoring the situation following a 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia on 10 August 2026. The earthquake occurred at approximately 7.34am local time, with its epicentre located near the town of San José del Palmar in the Department of Chocó. Tremors were felt across much of the country, particularly in major cities in Colombia’s central region, including Cali, Pereira, Manizales and Armenia, as well as in the capital, Bogotá, resulting in significant damage to buildings and infrastructure.
The Ministry has extended its deepest sympathies to the Government and people of the Republic of Colombia, especially those affected by this devastating natural disaster.
Separately, the Embassy of Malaysia in Lima, Peru, which is concurrently accredited to the Republic of Colombia, has confirmed that all registered Malaysian nationals in Colombia are safe and accounted for. At this juncture, the Colombian authorities are continuing to assess the situation, and the number of casualties and the full extent of the damage have yet to be determined. The Embassy remains in close contact with the relevant local authorities and will continue to monitor developments closely.
Wisma Putra has advised Malaysian nationals residing in or travelling in Colombia, particularly those in the affected areas to exercise the utmost caution, remain vigilant, and strictly adhere to all instructions and advisories issued by the Colombian authorities and local emergency services.
